Lessons Learned

The past two days we went through leadership keys that great leaders use to pull/influence those in their spheres. People are drawn to them. They are infectious.

Today we will talk about things I have learned first hand from working in the coaching and business development field. Doing these in any profession will help set you and those you serve up for personal success. Enjoy

GROW YOUR LISTENING - When you are in conversation with someone else, go as long as possible without talking. While you are doing this, really listen to the other person. While they are talking, pay attention to nonverbal cues like the body language, tone, and facial movements to decipher more than just the words they are saying. Listen to their language. Try your best to not interrupt them. See if you can go an entire conversation without interrupting.

EVERYONE’S TITLE - It doesn’t matter what position, rank, title, or level they are. They have a first name. Use it. Treat everyone as if they have no title and just want to be spoken to. Try to think about relationships and conversations with others where the title got in the way of learning from them.

GET THROUGH STEP 1 - Getting through step 1 allows for you to demonstrate progress. As a leader it is important for your ability to show members that action is a very important commodity. Action might be questions. It might be a set of tasks. It might be a challenge. It might be a number of reps. Fight for your members to be able to know Step 1 and be able to accomplish it.

SPARK - This is my call sign with a mentor of mine. It brings me to the point that our job is to help spark thinking and questioning, and then leaving them with the trust to do the job on their own. Chances are they will take it, own it, and end up with better solutions than you might have. Spark the fire and let them run with it.

BE THE EXAMPLE - Remember that people don’t hear what you say near as much as what they SEE you do. Your consistent pursuit might just remind them of what they are capable of reaching. How might your example be inspiring your team?
