Have you ever watched a fight? Not sat and yelled at the T.V. in hopes that you get to see a jaw dropping (literally) knock out. Have you watched a movie where they showed a little deeper into what is being said inside the corner? Have you ever noticed a strategy?
Boxing is very strategic as opposed to what most people think. Here are two things great boxers do other than knock people out…
1. They take information in FAST - Boxers can immediately tell what you will likely do based on your last punch, feet positioning, and hand position. They receive a strike, blow, or miss and take in the critical data. You will see them put up their guard if they’ve come to the belief a punch is coming. You will see them dance around the other because they know it is fatiguing the other or if they can disrupt the flow.
2. What is the Best Option Now - After they finish taking in the information, they have an immediate action to take. “What is the Best Option Now?” In this moment, with what I have, what is that best option. Once they know the best option, they immediately put it into play.
At what level do you bob and weave? At what level can you take in information? At what level can you select the best information in front of you and act on it?
That is where the practice comes into play! Let’s give it a try.
