LET FREEDOM LIVE

LET FREEDOM LIVE.

In 2014 Admiral McRaven delivered a powerful speech to the graduating class at University of Texas. It is one that has likely traveled across your desk or you have seen the video on YouTube.

As we celebrate Independence Day, I wanted to share with you some key points from this speech. I hope it fires you up as much as it did for me. We here at HLC are so thankful for the men and women who helped shape this country and devote our focus towards making it a better place than when they found it. Enjoy and HAPPY 4th! God Bless

Start by Making Your Bed: Admiral McRaven emphasized the importance of accomplishing small tasks successfully, starting with making your bed each morning. By completing this simple task, you begin the day with a sense of pride and accomplishment, setting the tone for the rest of the day's tasks.

Find Someone to Help You Paddle: Admiral McRaven shared the significance of teamwork and the need to rely on others for support. He encouraged graduates to surround themselves with people who uplift and challenge them, emphasizing that success is rarely achieved alone.

Get Over Being a Sugar Cookie: The term "sugar cookie" referred to the Navy SEALs' rigorous training exercise where trainees had to run into the ocean, cover themselves in sand, and then continue their physical training. Admiral McRaven conveyed the importance of embracing failure and learning from setbacks. He urged graduates to persevere, accept challenges, and maintain a positive attitude despite inevitable failures.

Don't Be Afraid of the Circus: The circus symbolized the Navy SEALs' difficult obstacle course. Admiral McRaven highlighted the need to confront and overcome fears, take risks, and step out of one's comfort zone to achieve greatness. He encouraged graduates to face their fears head-on and embrace the unknown.

Slide Down the Obstacle Head First: Admiral McRaven used the analogy of a daunting slide to emphasize the importance of taking calculated risks. He urged graduates to approach challenges with courage, determination, and a willingness to think creatively and take unconventional paths.

Don't Ever, Ever Ring the Bell: In Navy SEAL training, trainees had the option to quit by ringing a brass bell. Admiral McRaven advised graduates never to give up and to persevere even in the face of adversity. He emphasized the importance of resilience, grit, and unwavering determination in achieving personal and professional success.

Happy 4th and God Bless
