To get your brain reeling, we want to provide you with some questions. They are worth reflecting and even sharing with your staff so that you can all be on the same page for the start of the season. Please go back and look at past practice plans to help guide you through some of these questions. Here are 25 questions to get you ready for the start!
-What can you and your staff improve on this year?
-Is your practice schedule made? Will you be sharing the gym with other teams during your first few weeks of practice?
-How will you start and end practices?
-What roles will you give your assistants to do in practice and in games?
-Will you film practice? How many cameras do you have to film your practice? What will you look for when watching film?
-What drills did we do most last year? Were they the best drills to accomplish what was needed?
-Did you practices mimic your games? How might your practices mimic the style you want to play this year?
-What can we get rid of from last year and what should we implement again?
-What are our 3 most important aspects to focus on and how might we build our practices on them?
-What did other teams do successfully against you? How might you counter it now?
-How were my relationships with my players? How could I improve in this department?
-What responsibilities can I give my team?
-What will we chart and why?
-Do we have one vocabulary in which our staff and team can use/understand/implement?
-Who will set the standards and expectations? Staff? Team? All the above?
-How long will you practice and who holds you accountable for keeping you on track?
-How will you as a coach be different from last year?
We hope this helps get you and your staff’s wheels turning. The more questions you as a staff can ask, the deeper into the game you can get.
